We work with governments, schools, employers and health professionals to create change that supports people to reduce their cancer risk.

World Cancer Research Fund UK’s scientific research ensures that we provide people with evidence-informed policy recommendations. We work collaboratively with organisations to develop and advocate for policies to help reduce the burden of cancer and other non-communicable diseases.

Our advocacy helped ensure cancer prevention featured in the World Health Organization’s global plan for 2013-2020. This is an important commitment from governments around the world to introduce policies that will help people reduce their risk of cancer and other diseases. The government released a new Eatwell Guide which is very similar to our dietary recommendations for cancer prevention. This includes eating a wide variety of wholegrains, vegetables, fruit and pulses, reducing processed high calorie foods and drinks as well as limiting red meat and avoiding processed meat. We have recently campaigned on a variety of UK issues to make healthy choices easier. These have included highlighting a lack of healthy food and drink in hospital vending machines and campaigning for clearer nutritional food labelling.

Hospital vending machines

Our survey of England’s hospitals discovered nearly three-quarters had no policy to ensure that they provided healthy food and drink options in their vending machines. We highlighted this lack of guidelines in England, despite the governments of Scotland and Wales having issued guidance on healthy options.

Food labelling

The introduction of ‘traffic-light’ food labelling in the UK is a major success for World Cancer Research Fund UK after it campaigned for clearer nutritional displays to allow consumers to make informed choices about the foods and drinks they buy. Easily understood labels help people pick the healthier choice, which can reduce their cancer risk.

Our policy report

Our policy activities support our 2009 report, Policy and Action for Cancer Prevention, which provided evidence-based policy recommendations to key groups on how to help people reduce their cancer risk.
